Free Temporary Service on T-Mobile network?????

I Dont know if I was Dreaming or not(I know i wasnt) But i have a t-mobile prepaid phone, and I havent had minutes on it for about a good few months or so... but anyway i had my phone one day and it rang... shocking!!!... I answered and it was my friend. Somehow after i hung up, i was able to dial out and recieve calls for free.( No Im not on a plan) it was only for a couple of weeks but it actually worked then it suddenly stopped... What was that about???
